Hey kids! Tonight is Halloween. And if you live in one of the towns that still allows for trick-or-treating, the kids will have some fun. Or you could be heading to a Halloween party dressed in your finest attire. In any case, by the time the day ends, you will likely be worn out of hearing “Thriller”, “The Monster Mash” or “I’m Your Boogieman.” Honestly, it’s why we can only stand those songs for this time period. They get played right out of your mind.
Never fret. I’m here with 13 (obviously) musical options for this Halloween. Some of them will be downright obvious. Others are lesser-known but equally cool. In any case, hope you’ll enjoy it. I’ll try and limit the amount of heavy metal and dark stuff in this list. (Dimmu Borgir is awesome but I can’t imagine they’ll feature in anything but the most brutal of Halloween parties).
So with all that said, here we go…
Judas Priest – Night Crawler: Let’s start things off right. A lesser-known track from one of Britain’s great metal gods. Nothing like a monster hunting and devouring its victims to start things off.
Metallica – The Thing That Should Not Be: An ode to HP Lovecraft and his madness-inducing mythmaking? Featuring one of the hardest and meanest bass lines ever?
Tito & Tarantula – After Dark: Combine seductive Tex-Mex rhythm guitars with a song about falling in love with a mistress of darkness? Selma Hayek’s dance remains a thing of beauty.
Godsmack – Voodoo: Remember the old MTV show, Fear? Remember that it was this song that was used as the opening music? Remember when MTV showed music?
Queens of the Stone Age – Someone’s in the Wolf: I cannot recommend the album this song came from more. “Lullabies to Paralyze” is a whole album devoted to using fables and children stories to scare you.
Ozzy Osbourne – Mr. Crowley: You know Ozzy has to feature in here. So let’s go with his ode to the Church of Satan’s founder, Alistair Crowley.
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds – Red Right Hand: Nick Cave is a bad, bad man. And this song, though much copied and used, remains one of his best. It’s just bridled meanness.
Rob Zombie – Living Dead Girl: Can’t have Halloween without a little Rob Zombie. So let’s go with this little ditty – a love letter to a corpse.
Blue Oyster Cult – Godzilla: Rather than going with “Don’t Fear the Reaper”, why don’t we just rock out to their masterpiece to the giant Japanese monster. Don’t hate it. Embrace it!
Danzig – Mother: Gotta have a little Danzig in this. And Mother remains the most popular song of his solo career. If you want to find hell with him, he can show you what its like.
Creedence Clearwater Revival – Bad Moon Rising: I’ve always dreamt of hearing a gospel choir sining this song. It’s just beautifully apocalyptic, yet the calmness of it undersells it.
The Heavy – Can’t Play Dead: A new song that has a great beat and its fun while telling us that a woman will lead all her men to the grave? Perfect Halloween party fare!
Crud – Devil at the Wheel: This song sounds like something that would play as you’re being chased through Death Valley by the Devil as he drove the muscle car from hell!
